All have faced significant challenges, but many of them work together to stay safe, and share information about how to get by. Here are some of their stories.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"ArtP-articleContainer\">\n<div class=\"ArtP-articleBody\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"cms-textAlign-center\"><i>This reporting project was made possible by a grant from the\u00a0<\/i><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whqr.org\/2024-04-16\/the-fourth-estate-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Fourth Estate Fund<\/a><i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Nearly 1 million people experienced homelessness for the first time in 2023, according to the\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C9kPNjlgPsU\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">National Association to End Homelessness.<\/a>\u00a0Still more experienced it for a second, third, or fourth time. With a rising cost of living and high rents, more and more Americans are teetering on the edge. Here are the stories of some of those who&#8217;ve fallen through the cracks \u2014 and are trying to claw their way back up: Chelsea Alicia Sterling, Victor Quillen, Theresa Shively, Leroy Lyons, and Cindy (who asked that we only use her first name).<\/p>\n<p>As Victor told WHQR&#8217;s Kelly Kenoyer, despite the trials and tribulations he&#8217;s faced, &#8220;I try to stay positive. You gotta keep the hope up. Camping spots, however, are often kept close to the chest. She has to get to a better place so she can be there for her children.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>People who become homeless at some point in their lives\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpub\/article\/PIIS2468-2667(21)00210-3\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">almost always<\/a>\u00a0have\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whqr.org\/latest-local-news\/2023-04-12\/aces-part-i-addressing-adverse-childhood-experiences-in-the-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">adverse childhood experiences<\/a>\u00a0in their backgrounds. That trauma can lead to a higher likelihood of suicidal ideation, maladaptive behaviors, and addiction, among other problems. Getting out of homelessness can be a challenge: many people in the streets have their possessions stolen, and losing one&#8217;s ID can become a major roadblock to getting Social Security, food stamps, or Medicare\/Medicaid.
